The Big Trek Shatili - Omalo

Our 2019 trekking tour will take you both in the Tusheti and Khevsureti region. Shatili in the West and Omalo in the East are the only real villages along the route, which makes for a genuinely challenging outdoor experience. If you really want to get off the beaten track, here's your chance.

Along this route we find remarkable biodiversity, some of the world's oldest vineyards, and an ancient culture steeped in tradition.

About the trip
This is primarily a camping trip with some nights in hotels and locals' houses. The majority of walking is on good mountain paths. The hardest and the longest day (8-9 hours walking) of the trek is the day when we cross Atsunta Pass. Here the path gets narrow and sometimes almost disappears. Crossing Atsunta Pass involves walking on quite steep slopes. Some parts of the route lie on narrow, rough mountain tracks. We cross most of the streams by bridges, but there are few small streams to be crossed without bridges. An average day involves about 5-6 hours walk. The trek is suitable for any normally fit and healthy person used to trekking. The total trek is 5 days walking. Horses will carry all the luggage allowing us to walk with a daypack only.

On the way back to Tbilisi, you will have the chance of visiting the lovely village of Signagi and the amazing Lavra monastery in Davit Gareja with a stunning view on the Azerbaijani steppe!
